Thank you for visiting our new website. While still under development, we hope that this website will develop to be an excellent resource on all aspects of growing, buying or cooking local food.
Food accounts for about one third of the average person’s carbon footprint in Scotland, and shockingly we throw away around a third of the food we buy and that goes mostly to landfill sites and converts into Methane gas.
Growing or buying local food has a number of key benefits. Firstly it’s healthier. Much will be grown organically, and almost no transportation or packaging will be required. Compare that to a double wrapped cucumber that tastes of nothing from a local supermarket! It need not cost more, and in many cases it’s a lot cheaper. You can balance the food you can grow yourself and save money for buying the items you can’t. Changing your dietary habits away from ready made meals is easy, we have teamed with several local experts whe are happy to offer advice and support as we choose how to cook and prepare all of this fresh produce.
If you cannot grow your own fruit or veg, then supporting local farms and veg box companies will support local businesses and provide worthwhile jobs.
Some of you will have flats, or gardens that are too small or constantly in shade, but don’t worry, a little tomato plant in the front window, or some herbs will start you off, and you can also join the allotments group, or network with other like minded people to see if there’s a garden or spare bit of ground you could share.
School children are already being educated on various aspects of sustainability through the new curriculum and are growing their own food in school gardens and learning to eat healthily. It is very important that we ‘adults’ play our part too.
A number of initial talks have been planned for Feb/March (see our Events Page), with a monthly newsletter service, and other events being developed. So let 2009 be the year when you start getting those fingers green.
Join us in ‘going local’ with food we eat.
Thank you
